A political crisis has erupted in Abkhazia over recent agreements with Russia, leading to the opposition storming the government buildings and culminating with the ousting of president Aslan Bzhania on November 19. Such events are not entirely new to Abkhazia, in fact, this is the third consecutive change of power through public protests after 2014 and 2020.
In this seminar, we will discuss whether the current events are just business as usual for Abkhazia, or whether the changing relationship dynamics between Abkhazia, Georgia, and Russia make the situation different from previous crises.
